Abstract:
Climate change threatens to reverse gains in global child health made over the past 50 years. Greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution that result from the burning of fossil fuels pose the greatest public health threat of our generation. Climate change disproportionately affects children and disproportionately affects the poor; the combination of which means that existing disparities for poor children across the globe and in our own region stand to be magnified exponentially. It is critical that a global child health framework be applied when considering high-value adaptation strategies against a changing climate and that we employ the universal value of caring for our children to advocate for mitigation.

Jeff Robison, M.D. is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician at Primary Children’s Hospital and the Vice Chair for Community and Global Engagement in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah where he holds the Robert Bolte Endowed Chair in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. His research focuses on the care of acutely ill and injured children in resource-limited settings, linking academic medical centers with partners in low- and middle-income countries as well as rural and tribal regions of the United States and the impact of climate change on global child health.
