Over the past few years, an increasing number of U.S. colleges and universities have recognized the need to incorporate equity and justice into their institutional response to climate change. Several new resources have emerged to assist higher education institutions in this work, however significant barriers remain on many campuses. This seminar will provide an overview of what is happening nationally, specific examples of ways the University of Utah is working to center equity in current climate change action planning, and how students, faculty, and staff can get involved.

Kerry Case serves as the University of Utah’s first full-time Chief Sustainability Officer. In that role, she provides senior administrative leadership for planning and implementation of institutional sustainability efforts across all areas of the university. She oversees the work of the Sustainability Office and its research arm: the Global Change and Sustainability Center (GCSC), as well as efforts to incorporate sustainability into the academic curriculum. Kerry has been working to improve sustainability in Utah’s higher education institutions for nearly 20 years. Prior to joining the University of Utah, she was the Assistant Provost for Integrative Learning at Westminster College, where she started and directed their Environmental Center, and before that, directed Utah State University’s sustainable building demonstration and learning center. Kerry has taught undergraduate courses in Urban Agriculture, Sustainability, Environmental Rhetoric, Environmental Humanities, and Green Careers. She has a B.A. in English from the University of Colorado, a M.A. in Environmental Studies from the University of Oregon, and is a Certified Environmental Educator.
